Top 8 WordPress plugins for SEO… and the AutoSEO theme, especially
I just finished my first WordPress theme ever, AutoSEO.
AutoSEO is a 3-column theme that takes advantage of WordPress’s native search-engine friendly organization.
A few plugins are needed to make the AutoSEO theme run smoothly on WordPress 2.0, and a few other WordPress plugins come highly recommended.
These are the required plugins:
- First is the Feedburner plugin by Steve Smith. This WordPress plugin redirects your feeds to Feedburner, where you can track your subscriptions much more easily. If you don’t want to run this plugin in the AutoSEO theme, though, you can take it out with a little work in the sidebar.php and a lot of work in the feeds.php file. I’d recommend the “find and replace” feature of whatever editor you use to do that.
- Next up is the Top 10 Posts plugin. You can delete the tag for this one out of the sidebar.php file if you want — but it’s great for deep linking, so I don’t know why you’d want to be rid of it.
- No WordPress SEO theme — especially one named AutoSEO — is complete without Christine Davis’ Ultimate Tag Warrior (UTW) plugin. Christine, you rock.
More plugins for SEO that aren’t required to run the AutoSEO 3-column WordPress 2.0 theme… but SHOULD be… are:
- Google Sitemaps 3.0b1 by Arne Brachhold and its sidekick to add tags to your sitemap, too: Google Sitemaps - UTW Tag Addon by Stewart Farquhar.
- Head Meta Description adds the meta name=”description” tag and the content of your choice into your pages and posts for you.
- WWW Redirect keeps you from spreading your PR between your domain and www subdomain…
- …and Permalink Redirect sends 301 Redirects for your URLs.

Why did you make an updated package that does not require top10 posts and Feedburner? Would this be your recommendation going forward?

No — you should use them. The reason I took them out as ‘required’ is that WordPress asks that new themes be independent of plugins and hacks. That way it should work just fine without the plugins.
But I think you have a point in that it’s confusing, and the next release might require them again.

You need to extract them with a program like WinZip.
I zipped them with a free program called 7-Zip, which you could use if you don’t have WinZip.

You no longer need the Permalink Redirect and WWW Redirect plugins. Use .htaccess instead. This list is outdated and not for WP 2.3. Please skip ahead to newer posts.
