You need to extract them with a program like WinZip.

I zipped them with a free program called 7-Zip, which you could use if you don’t have WinZip.

No — you should use them. The reason I took them out as ‘required’ is that WordPress asks that new themes be independent of plugins and hacks. That way it should work just fine without the plugins.

But I think you have a point in that it’s confusing, and the next release might require them again.
